The holiday weekend is almost upon us and if you’re going away, what will you do with your dog? If you’re going to one of Michigan’s many state parks, you may be able to take Fido with you camping or to the beach. However, be considerate of other campers, says DNR parks and recreation spokeswoman Maia Turek.

“If you have a dog that barks a lot when you’re not around, you’re really not supposed to leave your pet in your RV when you’re not around or in your tent when you’re not around or even in your vehicle when you’re not around,” Turek said. “It’s an unusual situation for them and so they might be barking and even though you they’re not, they might be and that can cause problems for people.”

Turek says you have to have your dog on a six foot leash, which is a state law. She says you may still be able to find openings at some campgrounds, but they are filling up fast.
