The Michigan Department of Transportation is planning to install new signs along I-94 in Van Buren County to warn drivers of conditions that should make them slow down. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News the current MDOT five year plan calls for those variable speed signs in 2023. The signs will warn drivers about poor weather conditions, for example.

“Of all the counties through which I-94 runs in our state, Van Buren County gets the most significant, most severe winter weather,” Schirripa said. “The heaviest snowfall, the coldest temperatures, those kinds of things.”

Schirripa says the slower speed limits posted on the variable signs will be suggestions.

“We can’t drive for people, but we certainly want to get them the information to make the best choices they can.”

The signs will about the size of three speed limit signs next to each other, and Schirripa says their design beyond that hasn’t been worked out. He says most of them will be in Van Buren County, but there will also be some in Kalamazoo County.
