Ignoring the stop signal on school buses may become a lot more costly for Michigan drivers. State Representative Kevin Hertel has introduced a bill to increase the fine from $100 to $250 for a first offense, then up to $1,000 for repeat violations. He says it’s a common occurrence around the state.

“In Ingham County, the sheriff did a sting operation and caught five people just in one operation, and one of those individuals was intoxicated,” said Hertel. The suburban Detroit Democrat adds many people have seen it firsthand. “We want make sure that we do everything we can as a Legislature to address the problem as well.”

The bill would also allow the Secretary of State’s office to suspend the license of a driver with multiple offenses for up to a year.
