A new case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis has been confirmed in Berrien County. The Berrien County Health Department’s Nikki Britten tells WSJM News this brings the total for the county to two.

“The confirmation of that case is new,” Britten said. “It’s been under investigation for several weeks. We did just recently learn that it is a confirmed EEE case, but the onset date and exposure happened in early to mid August.”

There has also been a case found in a deer. Van Buren and Cass counties have also had cases. While Britten says EEE remains extremely rare and no one should be in a panic, the local health department does support the state’s aerial spraying for mosquitoes this weekend. Britten says even with the aerial spraying, everyone should still use bug spray, wear long pants and sleeves, and reduce time outside at night.
