The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education has held its first meeting since the death of President Stephen Mitchell, and there’s a lot for trustees to decide. On Tuesday, board Vice President Joseph Taylor said the agreement establishing an advisory committee to draft a report on turning the district around is being worked on.

“That will come next week,” Taylor said. “The attorney for Treasury is working on a joint resolution.”

The joint resolution is expected to lay out the positions on the advisory committee, but not name the actual members. The committee is supposed to start meeting this month to have its report by April. Also left to be decided is who will take a vacancy on the school board with the passing of Mr. Mitchell. Taylor said the board has 30 days from September 17 to appoint someone. Applications are being taken through October 11. The board held a moment of silence for Stephen Mitchell at Tuesday’s meeting, and a letter from Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressing her condolences and praising Mitchell’s work for the community was read.
