Congressman Fred Upton and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell are continuing to spread their message of bipartisanship and the importance of finding middle ground. The pair spoke to the Detroit Economic Club on Wednesday on a variety of topics from their Problem Solvers Caucus to protecting the Great Lakes and finding solutions for immigration and gun violence, but it was the very end of the program when attendees heard anything new.

Moderator Chuck Stokes from WXYZ-TV turned to the 2020 presidential election and noted Upton has at times been critical of Presidents regardless of party during his 30-plus years in the U.S. House.

“Are you ready to endorse the current President for a second term yet?” asked Stokes.

“Uh, not yet,” replied Upton. Stokes pressed on, saying “but you’re thinking about it?”

“We stayed in our own lane in the last cycle, we had our own race. We haven’t figured out what’s going to happen with next year,” said Upton. The St. Joseph Republican has not made any official announcement if he will seek an 18th term in the U.S. House, but was handing out “Upton 2020” items at the recent Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference on Mackinac Island. He will face a challenge from state Senator Jon Hoadley, a Kalamazoo Democrat, if he were to run again next year.

Stokes also asked Dingell about her party’s choices.

“Is there a Democrat, Congresswoman Dingell, that you’re ready to endorse yet?”

The answer from the Dearborn Democrat was a swift “no.”

Dingell laughed after Upton’s answer that “he made news, I didn’t.”
