Congressman Fred Upton has sent a letter to the Centers for Disease Control seeking more information about Eastern Equine Encephalitis. He tells WSJM News the increase in cases around Michigan this year is a concern.

“We’re almost now to double digit illnesses in our state,” Upton said. “This is much higher than normal in any year, and of course we know there’s no cure for this, there’s no vaccine, and about a third of the folks who are infected, it actually becomes fatal.”

Upton wrote the CDC to inquire about what it’s doing to help prevent EEE in the state. He also is seeking information regarding why there have been more cases of the mosquito-borne illness this year. In the meantime, his office reminds everyone to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and limit outdoor nighttime activities until we’ve had a hard frost.
