Congressman Fred Upton is a recipient of the 2019 Champion of Science Award from the national Science Coalition. The organization is a non-profit representing more than 50 research universities around the United States. Upton tells WSJM News he got the award for his 21st Century Cures legislation.

“It wasn’t just me,” Upton said. “This was a bipartisan effort that I’ve helped lead the last number of years on 21st Century Cures, the legislation that President Obama signed to speed up the approval of drugs and devices.”

Upton says the legislation also approved billions in funding for research. He says more is to come.

“I look forward to moving on to the next phase, and that is to update and improve this legislation, an efforrt that I’m already beginning to work on with my partner, Diana Degette, from Denver.”

The Science Coalition says it’s dedicated to preserving the federal government’s investment in scientific research. Upton received his award Tuesday from Dr. Rebecca Cunningham, the Interim Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan, and Patrick Lindsey, the Vice President of Government and Community Affairs at Wayne State University. Upton says he’s honored.
