Multi-Year License Plate Renewals Proposed For Michigan

New legislation before the state House would allow drivers in Michigan to renew their tags every two years instead of annually. State Representative Steve Johnson is the sponsor and says Michigan wouldn’t be the first to take this step.

“There’s at least ten other states that do this,” said Johnson. “A lot of them don’t have just the two-year option. They have a three or five-year option. We’re making sure to work with the Secretary of State’s office to craft the legislation in a way that gives Michigan residents the most options.”

Johnson says the goal is to reduce the number of times drivers need to visit the Secretary of States office. He adds it could be amended to include more than just a two-year renewal option.
