A weekend vehicle theft in Cass County has prompted the sheriff to remind everyone to keep their cars locked. Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says deputies were alerted to a stolen vehicle in the area of Vandalia around 6:40 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle had been stolen out of Elkhart, Indiana and police tracked in with GPS to Cass County. The driver fled from sheriff’s deputies through the village of Vandalia, going back to Indiana, and then returning to Michigan. The suspect eventually ran out of gas and surrendered to police on Calvin Center Road in Calvin Township. Behnke says the vehicle was stolen out of Elkhart when the owner had left it running to warm up. He reminds everyone of the risks of warming a vehicle and leaving it unattended.
