The Michigan Secretary of State’s office has mailed out 250,000 applications to the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to randomly selected voters. It’s the next step in a process to create Michigan’s first citizens redistricting commission, also one of the nation’s first, that voters approved in November 2018 as Proposal 2 to amend the Michigan Constitution. The 250,000 applications sent out in December went to voters who expressed an interest in serving on the commission, which will draw the state’s legislative districts for both the Michigan Legislature and Congress. When seated, the commission is supposed to consist of 13 members, four Democrats, four Republicans, and five unaffiliated voters. Applications for the commission can be found at RedistrictingMichigan.org and application workshops are being held across the state. In June of 2020, 200 semifinalists will be randomly selected from the pool of applicants. From there, the applicants will be further whittled down. The deadline for the commission to adopt a redistricting plan for Michigan’s districts is November 1, 2021.
