Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research will host a forum next week to explore the implications of the state’s new redistricting commission. It was created by voters in November of 2018 as a way to reduce gerrymandering of legislative districts. MSU Institute for Public Policy and Social Research Director Matt Grossman tells WSJM News the forum will be next Wednesday at the Anderson House Office Building across from the Michigan Capitol. It will explore how the redistricting commission will work, and more.

“We’ll also be reviewing some research on other states that have gone through a similar transition and how much of a difference that has made, and start thinking about the different kinds of principles of redistricting and the considerations that commissioners will have to keep in mind,” Grossman said.

The commission is being formed now with the goal of having its redistricting plan drawn up by November 1, 2021. It will be made up of four Democrats, four Republicans, and five independents. Grossman says next week’s forum will include Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. You can find out more at RedistrictingMichigan.org.
