The United Way of Southwest Michigan is once again offering tax preparation help now that tax season has arrived. Program manager Vera Sebree tells WSJM News you can get your taxes filed for free if you make less than $56,000 a year and are not a business owner.

“We have certified, tested tax volunteers who will sit down with your paperwork and do your taxes,” Sebree said. “We file them all electronically, and we can put your money right into the bank for you if you have a refund coming back.”

Sebree says even those who rent can qualify for credits that get them bigger refunds. For example.

“The Homestead Property Tax Credit that’s available to homeowners and to renters because when you pay rent, the landlord takes that money and pays the property taxes. So, even as a renter, you might be eligible for a property tax refund, and that could be as much as $1,500.”

Sebree says anyone who lives paycheck to paycheck could really benefit by having the United Way help them file. In Berrien and Cass counties, you can make an appointment for tax filing by calling 211 or looking at UWSM.org. In Van Buren County, they’re also holding walk-in days. You can find out more about dates, times, and locations right here.
