A campaign underway at Southwestern Michigan College aims to promote civic engagement among students. SMC Votes is being run in order to get more students voting in the March 10 presidential primary. The college says it will feature a series of non-partisan events. So far, SMC welcomed some representatives of the Dowagiac City Council to come and discuss their experiences and accomplishments last week. SMC Votes will continue with a presentation called “The Art of Politics,” focused on campaign posters, buttons, and shirts, on February 18. The college also plans a primary information night on March 3. In 2019, SMC received national recognition for excellence in student voter engagement from the non-partisan ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
