A press conference is planned for Wednesday as Ibrahim Parlak gives an update on his efforts to remain in the United States. The Kurdish immigrant owns a restaurant in Berrien County’s Harbert, and has been fighting to remain in the country for nearly 20 years. The U.S. government has been trying to deport Parlak to his native Turkey, but he and his supporters say he would be in danger there. In March of 2018, there was a hearing in an immigration court Detroit with a federal judge ruling that Parlak could be granted relief under the Convention Against Torture Act. However, the Department of Homeland Security appealed, claiming Parlak would be safe in Turkey. Parlak spokesperson Martin Dzuris says it “is way past time for our government to leave this man in peace.” The latest update on Parlak’s plight will be given at his press conference at Cafe Gulistan on Wednesday afternoon.
