Congressman Fred Upton’s decision to seek another term in this year’s elections was influenced by the prominence of Bernie Sanders in the Democratic presidential primaries. According to the Associated Press, Upton says downballot Democrats would be harmed by Sanders, adding Sanders is “too much to chew on” for many voters. The AP reports many “Republicans believe a Sanders nomination would dramatically increase their chances of capturing House control.” Upton announced this week he is running again, this time for term number 18. He had been eyed as a possible retiree from the House this year. Upton said in his campaign announcement he wants to continue working on fighting the opioid epidemic and on immigration reform, among other things.
