The state of Michigan is working to promote the Michigan Education Trust with an event in Grandville this week. MET Director Robin Lott tells WSJM News the trust is a way for parents to lock in today’s tuition rates for their kids so that when the kids go to college, they get a break.

“What you’re doing is buying credit hours at today’s cost, and we take those funds and invest them,” Lott said. “We compile the money together and invest it, and then when the child is ready to attend college, we pay the actual tuition based on the number of credits you’ve purchased.”

Lott says about 96% of students who have MET contract end up going to college, noting the average college student these days graduates with more than $35,000 in debt. Signing up for MET is a way to help them reduce that debt. MET leaders will be at the Kent District Library in Grandville on Thursday to sign students up and give them $100 in free tuition credits.
