The Van Buren District Library is planning a presentation on the history of Silver Beach this month. Education coordinator Kay McAdam tells WSJM News Silver Beach Carousel Society President Suz Schalon and Connie Yore, the curator for the Silver Beach Amusement Park Museum, will lead “The Way We Were,” a talk about past and current attractions at the St. Joseph beach. McAdam says she has fond memories of them.

“I grew up in southwest Michigan, and I have very fond memories of going over to Silver Beach for a Sunday afternoon on the beach,” McAdam said. “You could go to the amusement park, go in the fun house, ride the bumper cars, ride the Comet.”

That’s the wooden roller coaster that used to be at Silver Beach. While the amusement park is now gone, the carousel was reopened several years ago. McAdam says the effort to make that happen will be part of the discussion. The presentation will be on Thursday, March 26 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Decatur branch of the Van Buren District Library. Everyone is invited.
