20 years ago this week, Michigan passed its primary seat belt law, which has since gone on to save more than 3,400 lives. However, Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning spokesperson Kendall Wingrove says not all are following the law.

“Although the seat belt law has had a huge impact during its first 20 years, there’s still more to be done,” Wingrove said. “About 94.4% of people comply. That means about 5% do not. If we can get that last 5% to comply with the law, we’ll save an additional several dozen lives every year.”

Wingrove says passengers should always buckle up in the front seat and in the back seat.
