Restaurants and hotels around Michigan are taking steps to respond to the COVID-19 emergency. Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association President Justin Winslow tells WSJM News the industry is working to ensure staff and customers are protected.

“This industry has been a bit on edge,” Winslow said. “We have been going over the top to make sure daily, sometimes hourly, our members are getting as much information as they possibly can, whether it’s from the CDC, whether it is from some of our national association partners, and we’re also offering webinars.”

The MLRA is urging members to educate employees about the danger of COVID-19 and to grant them time away from work should they feel ill. Winslow says the industry has been experience economic effects of COVID-19 as events are cancelled.

“Event centers, the restaurants that service those, the caterers that service those, and the local hotels that service those large travel organizations and event center facilities have been the ones really taking it on the chin as there’s been a rash of cancellations.”

The MLRA is also advocating for government policies that soften any potential economic impact the hospitality industry might endure over the coming months. You can find out more right here.
