Benton Harbor Area Schools Superintendent Andrae Townsel says staff are working to disinfect the school buildings with classes shut down for three weeks. During his portion of a community update at Benton Harbor City Hall on Tuesday, Townsel said the district is planning to make online learning possible.

“Information has been shared and will continue to be shared with families on free internet services offered through Comcast,” Townsel said. “Our goal is to minimize learning loss and to maximize opportunities for students to remain engaged.”

Townsel said many teachers also sent the kids home with study packets last week. He added the plans aren’t stopping there.

“During the week of March 23, the [administrative] cabinet will begin to make contingency plans for possible school closures beyond April 5.”

Townsel said there are only a few staff members in the buildings at a time. Robocalls will be going out to parents in the weeks ahead to keep them informed.
