The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is warning park visitors to maintain social distance when at the attractions. DNR Parks and Recreation Chief Ron Olson tells WSJM News Tippy Dam Recreation Area in Manistee County was shut down this week because people weren’t following the rules.

“People were virtually shoulder to shoulder fishing along the banks on both sides of the Manistee River, and we did start making periodic announcements and things like that, and while we had some cooperation from people to social distance, we still had challenges from a number of people who would do it for a while and then stop doing it,” Olson said.

DNR staff are keeping an eye on people who visit all state parks.

“We’re chronicling people’s behavior and we’re trying to document that so we have evidence. We are putting up banners and things like that to remind people to social distance. It is a requirement, not just an advisory. It is a requirement.”

Olson says in the case of Tippy Dam, there were also a lot of visitors who traveled a long distance to get there. That kind of non-essential travel is not allowed. For now, all other state parks and recreation areas, trails, and boating access sites remain open, but they could be closed if people don’t behave.
