Traveling to anyone’s home except your own is now banned in Michigan starting Saturday and going through the end of the month. That’s among the changes to the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order issued by Governor Whitmer on Thursday, with the exceptions being you can go to a family member’s home to care for a relative or their pet. Whitmer says a statewide order needs to be in place, without lifting restrictions in areas where there are little to no cases of coronavirus.

“COVID-19 is present all across this state,” Whitmer said Thursday. “It might not have been detected, it might not have been tested for yet, we might not have had a fatality in every part of the state, but it is present statewide. The more people move around, the more likely it’s going to show up.”

Travel to vacation homes is also banned anywhere in Michigan.

“I’ve talked to rural hospital CEOs, who are very concerned about people traveling to a second home,” adds Whitmer. “They are not equipped to deal with a COVID-19 spread in large magnitude by people who are coming in to the community. So they’re asking people to stay home.”

Legislative Republicans are crying foul, saying some parts of the state and the economy need the restrictions eased. House Speaker Lee Chatfield says Whitmer had worked with them on all previous executive orders, but says she did not go with their recommendations this time around.
