First responders face extra stress right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in South Haven they’re getting extra encouragement from the community. South Haven Area Emergency Services Director Ron Wise tells WSJM News they had a surprise the other day.

“The other day when our staff came to work, out on the cement in front of our bay doors, people from the public had used chalk to write ‘stay well, stay safe, thank you for your job,’” Wise said. “They’ve done an amazing job just giving us support.”

Wise also says South Haven’s Do-it Corporation started making face shields, and provided 200 of them to SHAES.

“They made some designs, got with the local doctors from Bronson and perfected the design, and now it sounds like they’re making up to 25,000 per day, and they’re shipping them throughout the United States now.”

Wise says residents have also been giving firefighters and paramedics gift cards to local restaurants. He says it’s helpful to get community support at a time when everyone is worried about getting or spreading the illness.
