A new drive-thru COVID-19 testing site is now up and running at InterCare in Benton Harbor. CEO Velma Hendershott tells WSJM News it opened Friday with the help of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and took 13 tests on its first day. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you need to get an order from your doctor or InterCare to be tested.

“We will have staff that are stationed to do the test, a nurse, and then we have a kit and everything it packaged,” Hendershott said. “It’s sent on a daily basis through courier to a lab in Grand Rapids.”

The state this week expanded the criteria for getting tested, and Hendershott believes that will make a difference.

“The loosening of the criteria will increase the number of potential individuals that we will be able to test, which is obviously a good thing we want to do to identify what the community spread is.”

Hendershott says the COVID-19 test at Intercare is free. What if you don’t have health insurance?

“It’s not a barrier. We will deny access to testing to anyone.”

13 new drive-thru sites were announced by the state over the weekend. Hendershott says you need to call InterCare before showing up. The number is (855) 869-6900.
