The state is putting a focus on testing people at nursing homes. Dr. Joneigh Khaldun is Michigan’s chief medical officer and says all nursing homes are now required to report COVID-19 cases to the state, and as of Friday morning, 331 had reported. Khaldun says that’s about two-thirds of the skilled nursing facilities in Michigan.

“We’re working very closely with our local heath departments to work with these nursing facilities,” says Khaldun. “We have committed $3.8 million to support response efforts. This includes teams of local health experts and clinicians to provide assistance to those nursing homes and really work on expanding testing.”

Khaldun says 2,218 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported from nursing homes, with the majority in southeast Michigan. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said on Wednesday that 25% of everyone tested at nursing homes in Detroit had come back positive.
