With COVID-19 forcing everyone to practice social distancing, Congressman Fred Upton thinks the way things are done in Washington is going to have to change. He tells us the House vote on the most recent coronavirus relief package took hours because of the safety measures being taken. If it’s going to be that way for months, Upton says everyone’s going to need to get more coordinated.

“I think a lot of these decisions are going to bubble up, a lot of discussions are going to happen verbally to get agreements, and then move those bills knowing that there just isn’t going to be the time to bring up, for example, a defense bill [that] will often have a couple hundred different amendments. There’s going to have to be a pre-agreement.”

Upton says bipartisanship will also be key as lawmakers will need to focus on things that can actually get support. He has previously called for remote voting to be allowed.
