Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and St. Clair all hit record high water levels in April and they are expected to rise through the end of summer. Drew Gronewald is an associate professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Environment and Sustainability. He told Michigan News Network the past ten years have been the wettest decade in U.S. history, coupled with less evaporation and climate change.

“The Earth’s temperature is going up, the temperature of the ocean is going up, and those all affect the way air masses, moisture, and temperature migrate and move their way across Central and North America and the Great Lakes.”

Beyond the lakes, Gronewald says soil moisture in Michigan is also at a record high. That can make it harder for farmers to get successful crops from the fields to your table.
