Governor Whitmer is speaking out a bit about controversy that flared up over the weekend. She said her husband “made a failed attempt at humor last week when checking in with the small business that helps with our boat and dock up north.”

“He jokingly asked if being married to me might move him up in the que,” said the governor. “Obviously with the motorized boating prohibition in our early days of COVID-19, he thought it might get a laugh. It didn’t. And to be honest, I wasn’t laughing either when it was relayed to me, because I knew how it would be perceived.”

She opened the question and answer portion of Tuesday’s COVID-19 briefing with the short statement on what her husband had done.

“He regrets it. I wish it wouldn’t have happened. And that’s really all we have to say about it.”

Whitmer noted that despite rumors, she has not been to the family’s vacation home in Antrim County since the start of the pandemic, and First Gentleman Dr. Marc Mallory only went up to do yard work for a day or two.
