Benton Harbor City Commissioners are thanking the community for helping to make a weekend demonstration peaceful. The Sunday march and rally in response to police violence against black Americans was held without incident, and City Commissioner Ron Singleton said during a Monday meeting there is still much work to do. He talked about a recent conversation with his daughter that he found striking.

“What really got me was when she talked about being the mother of a black boy, and having concerns for his safety when she sees all of these different incidents, and to talk to her and try to reassure her that we’ve all got to come together and fix these problems.”

Singleton said things need to change in the culture. Mayor Marcus Muhammad reminded everyone the problem of police violence against black Americans extends well beyond George Floyd.

“It’s not going to stop until justice is not far off, but justice is being applied to these situations.”

Muhammad added Benton Harbor was the Little Engine that Could when it came to being peaceful this weekend when other cities turned into powder kegs. Commissioner Sharon Henderson said there are difficult discussions that must take place. She also thanked the organizers of Sunday’s march and demonstration, adding she looks forward to future engagements.
