This weekend will be a free fishing weekend in Michigan. Suzanne Stone with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division tells WSJM News events that are normally scheduled during the state’s two free fishing weekends per year have been canceled due to COVID-19, but there ought to be a lot of people hitting up state parks.

“There’s so many local places you can go, and we’ve actually seen a lot of people fishing at all of our lakes and rivers, and so we think that this weekend will be another very popular weekend to go fishing,” Stone said.

During free fishing weekends, a license is not needed to fish, but all of the other rules still apply. That’s things like catch limits and size. Free fishing weekends are intended to give people who might not otherwise go fishing a chance to do so free of charge so they might enjoy it and want to go again. Stone thinks with entry at the Michigan’s 103 state parks and recreation areas now free due to the pandemic, the weekend may be even busier than usual.
