Michigan lawmakers last year approved sweeping changes in an effort to reduce the cost of auto insurance. They take effect July 1. However, what if you haven’t had insurance before or have been driving around without it? House Speaker Pro Tem Jason Wentworth of Clare has an answer.

“If you didn’t carry auto insurance and you wanted to buy it, they would say, ‘You’re a risk because you didn’t have auto insurance prior. We’re going to raise your rates through the roof.’ That’s what you can’t afford, and we said. ‘No, you can’t do that.”

Wentworth talked about the changes on a zoom town hall on Monday. He says lawmakers are leaving it up to drivers to decide how much medical coverage they need, and that will help bring down rates. Wentworth says if you’re not sure what choices make the best sense for you, contact your insurance agent.
