Wearing a mask should not be political. So says Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who spoke Wednesday about the importance of everyone wearing a mask to stop the spread of COVID-19. She talked about some numbers.

“Two people wearing a mask cuts the possibility of transmission to 1.5%, whereas one person who’s carrying COVID-19 and is a-symptomatic has a 70% chance of infecting someone else who is even wearing a mask,” Whitmer said.

Numbers aren’t partisan. Whitmer said a new study shows if 80% of everyone wore a mask, coronavirus cases would plummet.

“Masks should not be political. They are designed to save our lives. Please wear your mask in public, and continue to practice social distancing.”

Whitmer also said it’s important that the powers of governors to issue orders to respond to the COVID emergency not be reduced. She said to make the COVID situation political is foolish, and all governors regardless of party need to be able to respond quickly to the health crisis.
