Doctors have announced a new breakthrough in the treatment of the coronavirus. Henry Ford Medical Group CEO Dr. Steven Kalkanis told Michigan News Network this week their infectious disease experts found positive results in the use of a certain steroid called methylprednisolone.

“We found that when we gave this steroid early on in an admission for someone who came into the hospital for COVID, their chance of needing a ventilator, their chance of needing to be admitted into the ICU, their chance of dying significantly decreased. Their entire clinical picture improved.”

Dr. Kalkanis says there has been broad improvement among patients. He said that adds a new weapon in their fight against COVID-19 that could be helpful in the event of a second wave.
