The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department will be out in force this Fourth of July weekend as part of a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Undersheriff Chuck Heit tells WSJM News there will be zero tolerance for those who drive impaired.

“We will have extra patrols out,” Heit said. “Obviously, it’s going to be an interesting Fourth of July with a lot of events like festivals and fireworks canceled, but we will still have extra patrols out there. We are encouraging people, if they’re going to drink, to make sure they have a designated driver and to be responsible for a safe Independence Day weekend.”

Heit says if you’re going to be drinking, designate a driver. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, drunk driving accounted for 29% of crash deaths in 2018.
