Michigan’s blueberry crop is expected to be strong this year. Michigan State University Extension fruit educator Mark Longstroth tells WSJM News it’s good news during this National Blueberry Month.

“We expect production this year to be about 85 million pounds because we had a freeze in May, and we expect good volumes of high quality blueberries,” Longstroth said. “We have probably the most flavorful blueberries because other states have planted newer varieties where they breed for fruit size so the fruit looks bigger but it doesn’t necessarily taste bigger. So I urge everybody in July to go out there and buy as many pounds of blueberries as you can.”

Longstroth says contrary to popular belief, Michigan is not the nation’s top blueberry producer. It’s third behind Washington and Oregon. Georgia also beat us last year.
