The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has now passed 70,000 and Governor Gretchen Whitmer is hinting schools may not be able to re-open. Since mid-March, more than 6,000 Michigan residents have died from the coronavirus, and the governor says continuing increases in numbers mean the state is closer to moving backward than forward.

“We are only seven weeks away from what we hope to be our kids’ return to in-person instruction,” Whitmer told Michigan News Network. “That is looking less likely as well.”

The governor said this is a “very concerning.” While schools around Michigan plan for the fall, they won’t be allowed to hold in-person classes if their region is not in Phase 4 of the governor’s MI Safe Start Plan. The governor is giving another COVID update at 3 p.m Wednesday.
