The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has extended the increased food assistance available to eligible Michigan residents for the rest of July. Spokesperson Bob Wheaton tells WSJM News at the start of the pandemic, the state eliminated income limits for those already receiving SNAP benefits.

“Typically, the amount of assistance you receive is based on the number of people in your household and your income and other factors,” Wheaton said. “So if a household that has, say, four people in it that has a higher income level will receive less in monthly food assistance than another family. But what we’ve done is basically done away with that, and everybody is able to receive the maximum.”

In other words, once you qualify for food assistance, it doesn’t matter what your income is and you get the maximum. For a family of four, the maximum available is $646 per month, and for an individual, it’s $194. Wheaton says 1.5 million Michiganders receive food assistance, and that has risen substantially since the pandemic started. The extended extra benefits will be applied automatically to Bridge Cards.
