Flights are increasing at the South Bend International Airport. SBN CEO Mike Daigle told WSJM News this week July and August will see much greater capacity than the previous months as people venture out during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were down at one point to about 6% of our travel that we would anticipate, and now we’re up just short of 40%,” Daigle said.

Daigle says for July, the number of flights coming in and out of SBN will increase 56% over June, while for August, the flights will increase another 42%.

“As the demand has come back, the airlines have continued to add some capacity back to us, and if the local traveling public uses that capacity, we will continue to see more.”

Daigle says the airport is taking a variety of precautions to protect people from COVID-19 transmission, as are the airlines. The airlines are requiring fliers to wear masks. He notes most of the travelers the airport is seeing right now are leisure travelers, although some business travel is also resuming.
