Driver Strikes Horses, Killing One Rider

A Schoolcraft woman is dead after the horse she was riding was stuck by a car in Allegan County on Friday. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department says deputies were sent to the scene at 146 Avenue near 9th Street in Leighton Township around 9:30 p.m. They found three horses, each with a rider, had been westbound on 146th when a westbound car hit two of the horses. 26-year-old Brittany Fender of Schoolcraft was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The other rider of a struck horse suffered minor injuries. The driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman from Byron Center, was not hurt. The crash remains under investigation. Police have not released the condition of the horses.
