Governor Gretchen Whitmer is establishing a Black Advisory Leadership Council in Michigan, and southwest Michigan is “more than likely” to have representation on the body. So says Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad, who told city commissioners this week he recently spoke with the governor.

“She plans to aggressively address the racial inequities, systemic racism, and work closely with urban communities, not with a hammer and a gavel, if you will, but with an open hand.”

Muhammad said his conversation with the governor was “excellent.” He added the governor plans to “listen and work with us where we are and where we want to be.”
