Michigan students who are enrolled in college career and technical education programs this fall are now eligible to receive food assistance if they meet certain eligibility requirements. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson Bob Wheaton tells WSJM News this would mostly apply to students at community colleges.

“There are students who in the past may not have been eligible due to work requirements related to food assistance, but we sought and gained federal approval to make these students, if they are enrolled in these career and technical education programs and meet the income requirements, make them eligible to receive food assistance,” Wheaton said.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are encouraging students to apply for food assistance benefits at Michigan.gov/MIBridges. Wheaton says around 16,000 Michigan college students likely qualify.
