Three K9s with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department are receiving free bullet and stab protective vests thanks to Vested Interest in K9s, a non-profit that works to protect police dogs around the country. Blek, Maxx, and Mika will get vests embroidered with the words “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.” They’re expected to receive the vests in eight to ten weeks. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says the potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged police personnel is custom fitted and costs more than $1,700 for just one. Since 2009, Vested Interest has provided more than 4,000 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible through donations. Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey says the department appreciates the support from Vested Interest.
