The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is advising everyone of an aquatic training exercise planned for this week in Niles. It says Michigan’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division from Region 5 will be conducting a joint live regional Dive Team exercise in the Saint Joseph River on Thursday. It will be centered in the downtown riverfront area of Niles, and several agencies will be taking part. Participating will be personnel from several water recovery and dive teams as well as supporting agencies, including the United States Coast Guard. There will be activity in and around the river from the Marmont Street boat launch to the south Riverfront Park boat launch. Also, support activity will be conducted at Riverfront Park near Ferry Street and at Lakeland Hospital. The sheriff’s department asks for everyone’s patience, and notes there will be no need to become alarmed when you see all of the activity going on.
