With time running out before Congress heads home for elections and holidays, Congressman Fred Upton is still holding out hope there could be a new COVID-19 relief bill. He tells WSJM News the Problem Solvers Caucus has been pushing its framework for something both sides can agree to.

“We’re so close that we just can’t let is get lost in electioneering and those benefits for needy communities and needy individuals being held off,” Upton said. “There’s a heartbeat here.”

Upton says a bill needs to be approved sooner rather than later.

“We’re trying to push our leadership on both sides of the aisle to get to a consensus so that we can take up legislation perhaps a little bit later this week, and if not, at least be on a 24 hour call so that if we can get a deal, everybody knows that they’ve got to come back.”

Upton says politics can’t stop the package from being approved when it’s needed by people and businesses that are hurting. He expects something with stimulus checks for people, loans for businesses, and money for state and local governments.
