Archery Deer Season Underway

As Michigan’s archery deer hunting season began Thursday, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants hunters to keep certain rules in mind. Chad Stewart is a deer biologist with the DNR who spoke with Michigan News Network about the hunting rules.

“If you’re hunting private property, you have to have permission to be on that property,” Stewart said. “Furthermore, and this is really important with archery, you have to get permission to trail that deer and sometimes if it goes on to someone else’s property, you have to get permission before you access it, even though you may have shot it on property you have permission to hunt on.”

In the meantime, Stewart says staffing and financial shortages due to COVID-19 have resulted in reductions in check-station and drop-box locations. There are also reductions in dates and hours of operation.
