Southwestern Michigan College is making good progress on getting its new cross country team up and running, so to speak. SMC Chief of Staff Brent Brewer tells WSJM News they expect to have approval from the National Junior College Athletic Association to form the team this month. Then they’ll announce their coach.

“We hope to be able to have a coach hired by October 15, be able to get that person on board, and be able to launch and move forward with the recruiting process,” Brewer said.

The ultimate goal will be to have 20 runners for each of the two teams, men and women. Brewer says bringing cross country back to SMC helps it to honor its history as the college had a popular cross country program decades ago. Also, it’s hoped the team will stir up school spirit on campus.

“The president has a vision of having alumni re-engagement, and to have invitationals on campus.”

SMC has launched a $40,000 fundraiser to support a new Recruiting Gallery to be located in the Student Activity Center. There, the history of the SMC Roadrunners will be displayed along information about the team’s present. The team could be taking part in competitions next fall.
