Congressman Fred Upton is seeking a federal grant to help with the development of the Southwest Michigan Advanced Research and Technology, or SMART, Park in Cassopolis. The SMART Park is a project of the Midwest Energy and Communication Cooperative. Upton tells WSJM News it will be a 450 acre state-of-the-art rail and fiber served business venture accommodating commercial and industrial projects.

“This is a very exciting project, probably one of the best job opportunities I’ve seen in some time, in decades,” Upton said.

Upton is urging the U.S. Economic Development Administration to approve a request from Midwest Energy for support.

“Frankly, this is something that the EDA and the state are always interested in, where they can work together, partner with private sector firms, and create a lot of jobs.”

The village of Cassopolis and Cass County have also expressed support for the construction of the business park. The project could lead to the creation of 1,000 jobs if it attracts enough businesses.
