The Berrien County Health Department says there’s no end in sight for the increased level of COVID-19 cases we have been seeing over the past month. Speaking Thursday, Berrien County Health Officer Nicki Britten said looking ahead to Thanksgiving, everyone needs to think about how they’re going to be safe. She noted the recent jump in COVID has been largely due to people gathering, often family members.

“Once somebody in a household is positive, there is a very, very high likelihood that their household contacts will also become infected,” Britten said.

Britten said people need to think about keeping their Thanksgiving to smaller groups, and other measures should be taken.

“When with family indoors, it feels really awkward, I understand, but maybe continue to wear your mask in somebody else’s house.”

Britten said health officials don’t want to see a glut of COVID cases pop up two weeks after Thanksgiving. Berrien County is seeing an average of 50 or more new cases of coronavirus per day. Britten said Spectrum Health Lakeland is keeping up, but the number of patients in older age groups has gone up recently, creating greater concern.
