The city of Benton Harbor has an update on the status of its boil water order, which was issued last Friday. It says the order remains in place, but things are headed in the right direction and more could be coming on Thursday. The city has released the following:

Pursuant to the City of Benton Harbor’s continued efforts to keep City of Benton Harbor residents, businesses and water users informed about the Water Boil in Benton Harbor, we want to make sure you have an update of progress and steps taken thus far for your safety.

Please know that your local City Commission, State Agency Representatives, and Berrien County Health Officials have been in constant contact and monitoring our progress toward resolving water issues and removing the Water Boil Notice as safely and as soon as possible.

To that end, your local City Staff Team has been following the prescribed resolutions process of:

1. Flushing fire hydrants;

2. Increasing chlorine levels;

3. Monitoring plant readings;

4. Taking water samples;

5. Forwarding collected samples to the lab for readings and results;

6. Having those results reported to our Water Regulator, EGLE, for final determinations; and

7. Having those results reported to me after each sampling event.

The City of Benton Harbor staff and partners have been working around the clock, and after today’s test results, we are optimistic to inform you that the Water Boil is heading in the right direction. After final results and confirmation from the State of Michigan, the City of Benton Harbor will be in a better position to give a final report some time tomorrow.
